Overview

The Thimphu Tshechu is one of the most vibrant and significant religious festivals in Bhutan. Celebrated annually in the capital city of Thimphu, this grand event honors Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century. Held in the courtyard of the Tashichho Dzong, the festival attracts thousands of locals and visitors who gather to witness the unique cultural and spiritual traditions of Bhutan.

  • Down jacket, all-season sleeping bag, duffel bag and trekking map(in case if you don’t have your own. Down jacket, sleeping bag and duffel bag must be returned after completion of the trip)

Arrive at Paro – Transfer to Thimphu

  • Arrive in Paro and drive to Thimphu.
  • Explore city highlights, including the Buddha Dordenma statue.
  • Overnight in Thimphu.

Thimphu Tshechu Festival – Day 1

  • Head to Tashichho Dzong early to witness the opening of the Tshechu.
  • Watch the colorful mask dances and cultural performances.
  • Explore local stalls offering food and crafts around the festival grounds.
  • Overnight in Thimphu.

Thimphu Tshechu Festival – Day 2

Spend the full day at the festival, immersing yourself in Bhutanese culture. Capture vibrant scenes of locals in their best Ghos and Kiras (traditional attire). Optional: Visit nearby landmarks like the Buddha Dordenma Statue and Changangkha Lhakhang in between performances. Overnight in Thimphu.

Thimphu Tshechu Festival – Final Day

  • Witness the sacred unveiling of the Thongdrel at dawn.
  • Enjoy the final mask dances and performances.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Takin Preserve or shop for handicrafts in Thimphu.
  • Overnight in Thimphu.

Thimphu to Paro – Sightseeing

Drive back to Paro and explore the historic town. Visit Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum, and Paro markets.Optional: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang) if time permits. Overnight in Paro.

Thimphu to Paro – Departure

Transfer to Paro International Airport for your flight.
